A box-spring (or divan in some countries) is a type of bed base typically consisting of a sturdy wooden frame covered in cloth and containing springs. Usually the box-spring is placed on top of a wooden or metal bedframe that sits on the floor and acts as a brace, except in the UK where the divan is more often fitted with small casters. The box-spring is usually the same size as the much softer mattress that is placed on it. Working together, the box-spring and mattress (with optional bed frame) make up a bed. It is common to find a box-spring and mattress being used together without the support of a frame underneath, the box spring being mounted directly on casters standing on the floor.

I don't usually write reviews for stuff, but this box spring left me speechless (not something you hear every day!), so I felt I had to share. As other reviewers have noted, this is a fantastic product. I moved, and my standard queen-sized box spring wouldn't fit up the stairs. This came to the rescue–it fits anywhere a queen mattress will, super easy setup and packing it back up to move again looks like it'll be easy too. This is half the price of a standard setup split queen box spring and works far better. Simply brilliant engineering, I found myself wondering why every box spring isn't like this. It feels just the same to sleep on as my standard box spring and seems to support the mattress in the same way. I don't think I'm ever going to buy a different kind of box spring for any bed!
I've had many beds over the years and the box springs of my past were made out of thin woods strips (for the frame inside) and easy to rip flimsy partially transparent material underneath. The picture of these is not really representative of the good quality and attractiveness that they are in real life. I bought two for my spare room. I thought it would be worthwhile due to price, no delivery fees, and who sees the box spring anyway? What the heck, right?! I was pleasantly surprised! The frames are metal and come folded in half in a box. All I did was pull them out of the box, push one side of the box spring down, and folded back the other side to lay flat, then zipped the covers up. Done. Totally assembled! The covering is a high quality, thicker, stretch material that goes beyond the material quality on a regular box spring (by far). It comes already on the flatted frame and just zips up over the metal frame once it's flat. It looks like it would easy to take off to wash if necessary? I'm very happy with these! I put flat fitted sheets over the box spring and my ordinary metal frame (instead of a dust ruffle) to make them look updated, like a fabric base of some of the new beds out now.
It is a comfortable if you have a decent mattress. I had a new, wooden, more expensive box spring before this box spring, and it was hard by comparison. This box spring is light, easy to move, and easy to set up. There is no assembly, just unfolding and zipping a zipper. Top and bottom are clearly marked. The metal frame is less susceptible to bed bugs than a wooden box spring.
When shopping for a mattress, don’t forget the foundation or box spring. Well-built mattress foundations provide extra support and hold mattresses in place with their non-skid tops—essential for a supportive sleep. Boxspring sizes range from twin and full to king and California king. A split queen box spring or foundation consists of two foundations that support the mattress—two foundations are also used for king size beds. When it comes to height, a box spring mattress either has a low or standard profile. A low mattress box spring is perfect for those who do not like to sleep too high off the ground. The shorter height compensates for a thicker mattress height. Mattress foundations should have solid wood construction with diagonal bar, corner supports and impact–protected plastic edges. Go the extra mile for comfort and treat yourself to a power base. This holds an adjustable mattress, perfect for personalizing your sleep position. Find a wide selection of power bases in-store.

First off, this box spring arrives in a package that's not overly heavy but is still large/unwieldy enough to require two people to lift it. However, because it's not heavy, as long as you have two people you'll be able to move it really easily. Secondly, you can't help but worry about setting up things like this – whether you'll have the right tools, whether all the little pieces arrived intact, etc. No worries about that with this, because it is the simplest thing in the world to assemble. It arrives flat, folded in half, and doesn't really look like a box spring. My mom panicked and thought they had mistakenly sent us a bed frame, but I figured I'd follow the directions and see what happened. You put it on the floor. You unfold it. It literally springs into shape. You put it onto your bed frame, with the side labeled “TOP” facing upward. That's it. All told, it took us less than 5 minutes to bring it upstairs, “assemble” it, and put it in place. I'm now typing this from the comfort of my newly box-spring'd bed, and I must say it's working out quite nicely so far. 🙂
The first rectangular spring-cushioned wire frames to support mattresses did not have wood rims or cloth covers. These were called bedsprings. More and more box-springs are being made out of wood, then covered in fabrics. Wood makes a better support system for the newer memory foam and latex mattresses. The newest design in box-springs is the folding box spring made of wood or metal, then covered in fabric which can fold in half and can be sent by shipping and courier companies.
I was skeptical about such an inexpensive solution to our queen-size mattress problem in a guest room – it's an Ikea mattress that has never been comfortable. We've already tried bed boards under the mattress, and mattress pads, but nothing gave a comfortable feel. What the mattress really needed, I now see, was a box spring. We priced box springs online and they were several hundred dollars, and we weren't even sure it would fit the Ikea frame. The I stumbled upon this device at Walmart. It's a perfect fit (1/4″ to spare on all sides) and does what it's supposed to do – makes an average mattress into a far better bed. The biggest issue was picking it up from the store and squeezing it into our SUV. It barely fit widthwise, and we had to leave the rear door open on the short ride home. Consider having it delivered to your home instead of to the store. Once home, it was easy enough for two people to carry upstairs, open, and install. No tools needed – you just unfold it and close a zipper. Highly recommended.
